Hey everyone, Doctor Peter Lynch here from Tri-States Chiropractic in Dubuque. Welcome back to the podcast.

So… summer is finally here, and I’ve got to tell you, this is the time of year when I see a lot of avoidable injuries walking through my door. And I mean a lot. People get outside, they get active, they tackle big projects they’ve been putting off all winter… and then boom. Back pain. Neck pain. They’re wondering what happened.

Here’s the thing. Your spine doesn’t get a vacation just because the weather’s nice. In fact, summer activities can be surprisingly tough on your back if you’re not careful. So today, I want to walk you through some simple ways to protect your spine while you’re enjoying everything summer has to offer.

Let’s start with yard work. I know, I know… you’ve been staring at that overgrown garden since April, and now you’re ready to spend eight hours out there getting it perfect. But here’s what happens. You’re bent over, pulling weeds, hunched forward for hours. That puts a ton of strain on your lower back and neck.

Instead, try this. Break it up into smaller chunks. Work for twenty or thirty minutes, then stand up, stretch, walk around. When you’re bending down, use a kneeling pad and switch positions frequently. And this is huge… when you’re lifting bags of mulch or soil, bend at your knees, not your waist. Keep that load close to your body. Your spine will thank you.

Now let’s talk about something people don’t think about… travel. Summer road trips are fantastic, but sitting in a car for hours? That’s rough on your back. Your discs don’t like prolonged sitting, and your muscles get tight and cranky.

So here’s what I tell my patients. Every hour, stop and move. Get out, walk around the rest stop, do some gentle stretches. While you’re driving, use a small pillow or rolled towel behind your lower back for support. Adjust your seat so your knees are slightly higher than your hips. It makes a real difference.

And here’s one more thing… swimming and beach activities. Now, swimming is actually great for your spine when done right. The water supports your body, takes pressure off your joints. But here’s where people get into trouble. They’re playing volleyball in the sand, running around in uneven terrain, twisting and diving. Or they’re lounging in a beach chair with terrible support, head cranked forward looking at their phone for three hours.

Pay attention to your posture, even when you’re relaxing. If you’re playing beach sports, warm up first. I’m serious. Do some arm circles, gentle twists, get your body ready. And if you’re swimming, focus on strokes that don’t hyperextend your neck… freestyle and backstroke are usually better than breaststroke for most people.

Here’s the bottom line. Stay active, enjoy your summer, but be smart about it. Listen to your body. If something doesn’t feel right, don’t push through it.

And look, if you do tweak something… if you bend down to pick up a cooler and feel that sharp catch in your back… don’t wait. Come see us. The sooner we can evaluate what’s going on and get you adjusted, the faster you’ll be back out there enjoying your summer.
