Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Peter Lynch from Tri-States Chiropractic here in Dubuque, and today we’re talking about something I’m really passionate about — chiropractic care for athletes and active adults.

Now, whether you’re a competitive runner, a weekend warrior, someone who hits the gym a few times a week, or maybe you’re out there coaching your kids’ soccer team every Saturday — this episode is for you. Because staying active is one of the best things you can do for your health. But it also puts real demands on your body. And I want to talk about how chiropractic care can help you move better, recover faster, and stay in the game longer.

Here’s what I hear a lot in my office. Someone comes in and says, “Doctor Lynch, I just started feeling this tightness in my hip,” or “my shoulder’s been bugging me since I started lifting again.” And almost always, when we dig into it, the problem isn’t just where they’re feeling the pain. It’s a movement pattern issue. It’s the way the body is compensating — shifting load from one area to another — until something finally speaks up and says, enough.

Let me break this down for you. Your spine is the central highway of your nervous system. Every signal that travels from your brain to your muscles — and back again — passes through or near your spine. When the joints in your spine and pelvis aren’t moving the way they should, it creates interference in that system. Your muscles don’t fire as efficiently. Your coordination suffers. Your recovery slows down. And your risk of injury goes up.

Now, here’s the thing about athletes specifically. Your body is under a higher load than the average person. You’re asking your joints to do more, more often. So even small misalignments or restrictions in your spine or your extremity joints — your hips, your knees, your ankles, your shoulders — can have a bigger impact on your performance and your comfort than they would for someone who’s less active. It’s kind of like a car that’s slightly out of alignment. At low speeds, you might not notice. But take that car up to highway speed — and suddenly it’s pulling, vibrating, and wearing out your tires unevenly.

Here’s what’s interesting. A lot of athletes come to see me only when something hurts. And that’s totally fine — we absolutely help with that. But some of the most rewarding work I do is with patients who come in proactively. They want to catch restrictions before they become injuries. They want to keep their joints moving well, their muscles firing correctly, and their recovery time as short as possible. That kind of maintenance care can make a real difference in how you feel and how you perform.

So what can you do right now? A few simple things. First, pay attention to asymmetry. If one hip feels tighter than the other, if one shoulder moves differently, if you’re favoring one side when you run or squat — don’t ignore that. Asymmetry is often the first sign that something is off. Second, don’t skip your warm-up and cool-down. I know, you’ve heard it a thousand times. But dynamic movement before activity and some gentle stretching after genuinely helps your joints recover. And third, listen to your body. Soreness is normal. Sharp pain, persistent aching, or discomfort that doesn’t go away in a day or two — that’s your body asking for help.

And that’s really when I’d love to see you. If you’re an active adult dealing with recurring tightness, nagging pain, or you just feel like you’re not moving as well as you used to — come in and let us take a look. A thorough evaluation can tell us so much about how your body is functioning, where restrictions exist, and what we can do to get you back to feeling your best.
